ADOPT A UNIT

Adopt - A - Unit Program

The Adopt-A-Unit Program unites the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and its Auxiliary with local military units, forging enduring bonds grounded in support, compassion, and community. Through this meaningful partnership, we stand committed to strengthening connections, uplifting service members and their families, and ensuring they are never without the backing of those who have served before them—across Illinois and beyond.

Program Purpose: To build a steadfast and enduring bond between VFW Posts, Auxiliaries, and our active-duty, Guard, and Reserve military units through purposeful outreach, impactful events, and unwavering support. Our mission is simple yet vital: to ensure that every service member and their family feels recognized, supported, and never forgotten—whether deployed overseas or here at home.

Why Adopt-A-Unit

Adopting a unit deepens your connection to the community while delivering meaningful support to service members and their families. It also creates a powerful opportunity to share the value of VFW membership and link military families to the resources, programs, and support networks available to them.

How to Find a Unit

  • Contact your local National Guard, Reserve, or active-duty units.
  • Review available unit listings through vfw.org/troopsupport.
  • Network with nearby VFW Posts or veteran organizations who may already work with units in your area.

Getting Started

There’s never a wrong time to get started. Whether a unit is deployed overseas or serving locally, your support has a meaningful impact. Begin by completing an Adopt-A-Unit application—available on the VFW National website—and submit it to the Military Assistance Program (MAP) Office to take the first step.
